Malta combines nice beaches, great marinas, beautiful towns, quiet small villages and a variety of attractions. It is actually an archipelago of 3 main (Malta, Gozo and Comino) and a dozen of smaller uninhabited islands that lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean sea.
With some of the Mediterranean sea’s clearest waters and the greatest density of historic sights, Malta is a fantastic destination.
It seems that the myth about its name “the land of the honey” is truth: the most common etymology is that the word Malta derives from Greek word μέλι, meli, "honey". The ancient Greeks called the island Μελίτη (Melitē) meaning "honey-sweet", possibly due to Malta's unique production of honey.
Malta is also known as the island of Knights because of the knights that had been moved to the island driven out of Rhodes by the Ottoman Empire in 1522. Gozo, at only 26 square miles, is less crowded than the main island. It's a place of farmers and fishermen. In spring it is green and flowering, but this was not evident in July. Tradition has it that Gozo is the island where the nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive for seven years.
